Sending Notes to Athena: What Happens to the Existing Note
After generating and reviewing your note in Attend, you can send its mapped sections to the patient's existing Athena encounter.
Before you send
Confirm that:
The correct patient is associated with the Attend encounter
The patient has the correct Athena appointment
The patient has been checked in and the Athena encounter exists
Your Attend account is assigned to the correct Athena provider. (This will be done by your IT or informatics team)
The note has content
The template has valid Athena destinations
You have reviewed the note for accuracy and completeness
Send the note
Open the completed encounter in Attend.
Review and edit the generated note.
Click Send to EHR.
Verify the patient name, date of birth, and destination.
Confirm the send.
Wait for the success message in Attend.
Refresh the note in Athena
Important: After Attend confirms a successful send, refresh or reopen the note inside Athena.
Athena may continue displaying the version that was already loaded before the writeback completed. Refreshing or reopening the note allows Athena to load the updated section content.
Do this before assuming the note is missing or clicking Resend to EHR.
Where the content appears
The template used in Attend controls where each section is written. Supported destinations are:
History of Present Illness
Review of Systems
Physical Exam
Assessment and Plan
Sections configured as Do not send to Athena remain in Attend and are omitted from the Athena writeback. Empty sections are also skipped.
If more than one Attend section maps to the same Athena destination, Attend combines that content into a single update, preserving the order of the Attend sections.
Existing Athena content is preserved
Attend appends its content rather than replacing the existing section text.
This means:
Free text entered directly in Athena remains in the note
Content sent previously from Attend remains in the note
Athena templates and structured findings in HPI, Review of Systems, and Physical Exam are preserved
Sections that are not targeted by the template mapping are not changed by the writeback
Edits made directly in Athena do not sync back to Attend.
Success and partial success messages
A successful message means the mapped sections were accepted by Athena. Refresh the Athena note and review the result before signing.
You may also see a message such as:
"Note partially written to Athena Health. One or more sections could not be updated."
This means at least one section succeeded and at least one failed. Refresh Athena and determine which sections arrived before retrying. A resend submits all current mapped sections again, including sections that may have already succeeded.
Review and sign in Athena
Attend does not replace your normal Athena review process.
After sending:
Refresh or reopen the note in Athena.
Review every updated section.
Make any necessary edits in Athena.
Complete your normal signing workflow.
The version finalized in Athena is the clinical record.
