Athena Integration: Overview

Attend integrates with athenaOne to help you prepare clinical documentation with relevant chart context and return your completed note to the correct Athena encounter.

This article explains what the integration does, the basic workflow, and the most important differences between Athena and other EHR integrations.

What you can do

Once your organization has connected Athena to Attend, you can:

  • View patients on your Athena schedule

  • Search for patients by name or date of birth

  • Add information from the patient's Athena chart as context for note generation

  • Send completed note content to supported sections of an existing Athena encounter

  • Return to an Attend encounter later and send an updated version when necessary

How sending to Athena works

Athena writeback updates an existing encounter. Attend does not create a separate encounter or a second standalone note.

The sections of your Attend template determine where content is written in Athena. Attend currently supports these Athena destinations:

  • History of Present Illness

  • Review of Systems

  • Physical Exam

  • Assessment and Plan

Content already entered in Athena is preserved. Attend appends the mapped content to the existing section instead of replacing the section.

Important: After Attend confirms that a note was sent, refresh or reopen the note inside Athena. Athena may continue displaying the version that was already open until the note is refreshed.

Requirements

Before you can use the integration:

  • Your organization must have the Athena integration enabled in Attend

  • Your Attend account must be assigned to the correct athenaOne provider

  • The note template must have valid Athena destinations

  • The patient must have an Athena appointment and an encounter that Attend can validate

  • The patient generally must be checked in before Attend can write to the encounter

Your workspace administrator or the Attend support team can help if your provider assignment or template setup is incomplete.

Typical workflow

  1. Start a new encounter in Attend.

  2. Select the patient from your Athena schedule or search for the patient.

  3. Optionally add chart context from Athena.

  4. Record the visit and generate your note.

  5. Review and edit the note in Attend.

  6. Click Send to EHR.

  7. Confirm the patient and destination.

  8. Refresh or reopen the note in Athena and review the updated sections.

  9. Complete your normal review and signing process in Athena.

Good to know

  • Selecting a patient does not create an Athena appointment or check the patient in.

  • Template mapping controls which Attend sections are sent and where they appear.

  • Sections configured as Do not send to Athena remain in Attend but are omitted from writeback.

  • Changes made directly in Athena do not sync back to the Attend note.

  • After a successful send, the button changes to Resend to EHR. In Athena, resending appends the mapped content again and may create duplicates.
